Shattered Glass Ops

LeBron James was an all-state wide receiver in high school. Is he considering a jump to the NFL?

It was a quiet Tuesday afternoon in the NBA world. With news of 100 games being canceled, fans are taking long walks outside, kicking pebbles with their hands in their pockets, and wondering when all this bad news will end. Bubbles have been burst and hopes of the season starting on time have been extinguished by billionaires.

Nothing worth getting excited about.

... until this happened:

@ClaytonESPN When is the deadline for a team to sign a free agent?Tue Oct 11 18:51:02 via Echofon

That's LeBron James asking ESPN NFL reporter John Clayton about the deadline for free agents to sign with an NFL club. And Twitter promptly blew up in a speculative inferno.

Obviously, LeBron is trying to stir up some fun by asking an innocent question -- innocent if it was asked by anyone other than LeBron. Of course, LeBron isn't your typical athlete.

Standing at 6-foot-9, 250 pounds, he would be a protypical tight-end with freakish athleticism, speed, and hands. Because of the lockout, he's free to do what he wants with his career. David Stern is a powerful man, but he is powerless against this.

We've seen cross-sport athletes before -- Michael Jordan, Danny Ainge, Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders to name a few -- so there's precedence for such a move. He played football in high school and was first-team all-state playing wide receiver as a sophomore.

Our own Brian Windhorst, who went to the same high school as LeBron, informs us on Twitter that LeBron was an absolute terror to guard, especially on fades to the back of the endzone. LeBron was 6-foot-6 at the time when he played for St. Vincent-St. Mary's, going against 5-foot-10 cornerbacks. He recently suited up for his high school squad in practice and that sparked national headlines.

The question of LeBron James' football talents have been broached before. In an ESPN.com story two years ago, Green Bay Packers Hall of Famer Mark Murphy said of LeBron:

"I've been around a lot of great receivers. I tell people that I rate my top receivers -- coaching, playing or watching -- as James Lofton, Jerry Rice, Steve Largent and LeBron James."

Murphy went on to say that he swears LeBron could have gone straight to the NFL out of high school.

Sure, this is probably just a bored athlete toying with a gullible audience. But, man, it's a spectacular way to ignite some water cooler chatter, isn't it?

Would Cleveland Browns fans approve of his signing? For that matter, would the winless Miami Dolphins want him, knowing that it could potentially jeopardize both his Heat career and the Andrew Luck sweepstakes? Knowing that LeBron is a big fan of the Dallas Cowboys, how much would deep-pocketed owner Jerry Jones offer him to suit up for America's team?

Perhaps the most important question:

Is Pat Riley conscious?

UPDATE:

John Clayton responds!

LeBron, sorry to get back to you so late. Trade deadline next Tuesday 4 p.m. Free agency goes until last team is eliminated. Game on.Tue Oct 11 21:03:04 via yoono

Clayton added some advice: "LeBron,, don't look at the Philadelphia Eagles. You're already on a Dream Team."

Also, the Eagles have been terrible. LeBron wrapped up the exchange:

@ClaytonESPN All good, Thanks Clayton!Tue Oct 11 21:08:29 via Echofon

Old v.s. New Media

The media advances over the years has been incredible. All media is advancing so fast from the advancement of telegraphs to cell phones, from writing on stone to sending newspapers all over the states, there are so many things that have advanced in media, and i believe its just going to get more advanced.
Before cell phones, computers and modern day newspapers, some of the only ways to spread media was smoke signals, word of mouth, and fireworks. Everything in media has advanced greatly in such a short period of time. For example, newspapers. They used to only be monthly newspapers or newspapers that were just written on stone or scribes. The only way newspapers would be issued more than once a month is if something really important happened in that area that absolutly needed to be shared with the public. Also with cell phones. We can now also make calls, texts, or surf the web whenever or whereever we want with the cell phone companies "smart phones". Cell phones only came out in the early 1990's, and there was no such thing as texting, or surfing the internet from your phone. They have came a long ways in such a short period of time. The internet is another thing that has advanced greatly. when the internet came out, only imporrtant buildngs, or scientists had access to the internet. Now, almost anywhere you go, they have internet. It also was a long dial up process that needed an ethernet cord in order to get online. Now we have wireless, wifi, and high speed internet access almost anywhere you go.
Overall, both the media and technology have advanced so much in such a short period of time. It is weird to think about how much more technology and media can advance. Does technology and media have limits? In my opinion, both media and technology will never have limits set to them. There will always be the next best technological device that comes out that helps media also advance.

Top Ten Advancements in Media

1) Hieroglyphics- 3100 BCE to 400 CE- found in Egypt and Africa
2)Newspapers (printing press)- 1447- in Europe- Johann Gutenburg
3)Magazines-1731-London- The Gentlemans Magazine
4)Electrical Telegraph-1835-Samuel Morse
5)Movies-1878-Horse In Motion-1878-Edward Maybridge
6)Radio-1922 were when radio was first broadcasted
7)Television-first expanded in 1932-proper sense 1936
8)Video Games- 1958-"Tennis for Two"
9)Mobile Devices- 1973-Japan-Martin Cooper
10)Internet-Mid 1990's

The internet has transformed greatly sense it has been invented. The first person to use the internet was a student at UCLA named Charlie Kline on October 29, 1969. The internet was mainly designed to provide a communcation network that would work even if some of the sites were destroyed by nuclear attack. For the most part, the early internet was used by computer experts, engineers, scientists and librarians. There werent any home or office computers back then, and anyone was allowed to use it as long as they learned how to use the complex system.

Mobile devices have also made a huge advancement since they first came out. I remember the first phone my mom got. It was a square Nokia phone and i always stole it from her so i could play the snakw game that came on the phone. Now i have an Iphone that stores my music, videos, you can download almost anything from Itunes aps, and you can go on the internet with almost any kind of phone now. The "smart phones" can basically do anything for you now.

Television is yet another big source of media that has advamced over the years. The obvious use of television is to watch shows for enjoyment, or to watch the sport you like to watch. However, it is also a good form of media and communication. For example, if the president needs to make a speech, he interupts our shows we were watching, and says a speech about the problem at hand. Its a way to see news conferences from your favorite sports players, and also to watch late night talk shows to get their opinions on whats going on in the world. Televisions have also advanced in style also. There no longer is the huge box on the back of your tv, there are flatscreens, plasmas and even 3d tv's now.
